This page contains hints on setting up cellular network connectivity for specific carriers.
For more general information, see Modem and carrier support. For the APN settings see APN Settings.

Check compatibility
To check if the PinePhone is supported on your carrier:

Search for your carrier on frequencycheck.com and compare the carrier's LTE/GSM/WCDMA frequencies to the PinePhone's supported frequencies (listed in the modem specification sheet).

It is likely that there will be a few frequencies that your carrier uses which are not supported by the PinePhone. Not all of the carrier's frequencies need to be supported by the PinePhone for it to work - as long as most of them are supported, you will still get good coverage.
Special carrier notes
Some carriers might support only certain frequencies or might require certain settings in Ofono or ModemManager. The following is a list of collected notes for carriers regarding special settings, hints or information:

USA
AT&T
According to this page, AT&T's primary bands are 12 and 17 - 700ac and 700 MHz respectively. The PinePhone seems to work out-of-the-box with AT&T. If you transfer a SIM card from another phone you were using with AT&T, you need to activate the PinePhone through AT&T's website. Calls and SMS messages work. VoLTE is as yet untested.

However, it is likely AT&T will drop support with their network upgrade in the near future like their child company Cricket Wireless already has. This page lists their supported devices for their new network.

Cricket Wireless
Cricket wireless is a MVNO that uses AT&T's network. VoLTE was fully supported, but the PinePhone is no longer considered a compatible device in the US by the carrier (as of March 2021).

SimpleMobile
SimpleMobile is a T-Mobile prepaid MVNO operating in the United States. 4G LTE, VoLTE, data, and SMS all work on the PinePhone after activation. Activation can be done online without extra software or assistance, go to https://www.simplemobile.com/activation/byopcollectsim and make sure you have your SIM card and IMEI ready.

Sprint
Sprint is currently not supported due to unknown reasons. Any input regarding this issue is highly appreciated.

T-Mobile
According to this page,
T-Mobile's primary frequency band for the United States is 12 (700ac MHz).

T-Mobile's bands and protocols are summarized on
this page.

While the PinePhone's modem does support all LTE bands that T-Mobile uses in the US (And is one of the best choices for band support with the PinePhone's modem in the US), VoLTE is still listed as "Under development" by the modem manufacturer. T-Mobile's system also does not list the PinePhone as a compatible device due to this lack of official VoLTE support. The modem is capable of working on T-Mobile with VoLTE support enabled.

Verizon
According to this page,
Verizon's primary frequency band for the United States is 13 (700 MHz). Verizon's bands and protocols are summarized on
this page. According to the same page, Verizon might restrict their network to only approved devices.

Some users reported that they were able to activate their Verizon SIM by using an Verizon-approved burner phone and then inserting the SIM into the PinePhone.

Known issues
Known issues:
* The FrequencyCheck model page does not list either Pine64 or the PinePhone.
* T-Mobile's system does not list the PinePhone as a compatible device due to the lack of official VoLTE support from the manufacturer, despite the fact that it does work.
* MMS doesn't currently work in any distribution on the PinePhone by default. This means images and group chats will not work in text messages.
* Some providers may allow only certain known devices identified by their Type Allocation Code.

MMS workarounds
These scripts allow partial MMS support on a PinePhone:

* JMMS:
* silvermms:
* MMS via Matrix with mmmpuppet: MMS with Matrix

There is a Haskel MMS client. MMS can also be manually composed with mmsd on the command line.

Resources
* IMEI - International Mobile Equipment Identity

* MMS via Matrix with mmmpuppet: MMS with Matrix

There is a Haskel MMS client. MMS can also be manually composed with mmsd on the command line.

USA
AT&T
According to this page, AT&T's primary bands are 12 and 17 - 700ac and 700 MHz respectively.

* JMMS:
* silvermms:
* MMS via Matrix with mmmpuppet: MMS with Matrix

There is a Haskel MMS client. MMS can also be manually composed with mmsd on the command line.

Resources
* IMEI - International Mobile Equipment Identity

Hi. I am Daniel Grynvald aged 56. I live in Israel.

I ordered a Pinephone from Hongkong on April 8. Recieved by me by pickup at DHL Airport City Tel Aviv May 7.Shipping and Delivery was not smooth and added another US$ 128 to the price of this new development hardware.
My reasons for ordering an experimental electronic linux device are many.
These posh Electronic glass soaps are the new yokes that we have to carry around in a creepy new brave world.
They do our ID-ing our health, Banking, finances travel, dating, and many times daily work.
I am writing this on my Samsung Galaxy. I hope soon to switch to write it on my Pine phone, and or other Pine64 devices.
I am not here as another Tech nerd or Gaming fanatic. I want to peek at these devices from a normal globalized citizens perspective. Gender inclusively.

My password was hijacked so I'm now editing this from a new User ID.
It is up to Pine64 seniors to link up pages such as mine into a useable and readable digest for others to enjoy, so for now it will remain as is.

My Pinephone B.E. First impressions + Charge attempt.
My new Pinephone unlike the replacement screen I received by mail, is clean and without scratches and peaces of sand under the protection film. I notice that the screen protector that is fitted in an arbitrary angle towards the LCD is much narrower than the screen itself. I try the soft cover I received and it doesn't reach up to the glass edge, leaving the LCD completely unprotected in a fall. The soft case hase a loose fit and gives a feel like the phone might slip out any second. The hard case has a much better fit, but doesnt protect the LCD either.

Trying to be a good beta tester I read the guick start guide, where the claim is that you need a 15W+ charger which is much beefier than I have seen for Li Ione batteries of this calibre. The best I have is the Fully charged 10000 mAh Power Bank that I regularly use for my Galaxy J7. I attach the red USB-C cord that came with the Pine phone.

Because of bad previous experiences, and because of failing to understand the philosophy behind Manjaro and K desktop , I avoid pressing the ON button.

Also I turn off all the DIP switches and release the tab from the battery. Then I connect the charger. Now my expected outcome of plugging a charger to a new electronic device is to see a (yellow?) charging LED light up in a steady blinking manor. The LED color red in steady shine to me generally indicate serious malfunction of some sort.

The outcome: First a few seconds of nothing. Then a steady shining red LED. for a few seconds. After that the phone vibrates as if to say. Hi this is a Samsung Booting. The LED changes color to yellowish and then goes out while I chockingly watch the ugly white K Desktop animation appear on a black LCD background. After a few seconds of this a Samsungish home screen background appears with the words "welcome" printed over an arrow to click on.

This is where I turn the phone of by forcefully holding the power button in for a bout 5 seconds.

I repeat the procedure once more with the same boot-up result. To confirm that this is general boot behavior, I also press the power button without the charger plugged in. Pine64 claims to only assure warranty on hardware and not on software. According to nightly Telegram messaging battery charging is not performed with a micro controller, but part of the Operating system distros, and we all know the challenges that they are all facing at the moment. Also apparent accordingly: If no OS image is present then Battery will not charge. If battery is empty. and no OS is there. the phone will appear as faulty. I fail to understand how a Pine64 can leave the battery charging of a development phone with an arbitrary OS boot up to whoever decides is the coolest way to charge it. Isnt the hardware all supposed to be part of the same package?

Edit as of May 17 -21: Devs say Battery charging is done through a circuit called anx 78xx or similar that quietly charges your phone even without OS, so its only a LED notiication that is missing. This is still a firmware bug, but since it is one bug of many, it will probably fall to bottom of a todo list.

Carrier Support in Australia
Just wanted to add this somewhere because I couldn't find this info anywhere and took a punt ordering one, without knowing if it would work!! I'm not sure how to incorporate it properly because this breaks wiki style rules and I am new to Pine64 culture

<blockquote>

I am using a PinePhone in regional Victoria with Amaysim, and SMS worked. Phone picked up 2G, 3G and 4G (haven't tested mobile data). Phone calls worked with scratchy sound. An OS crash caused some glitches (lost the call but it was still connected somehow...) - but the issues were just software issues that will be worked out as the OS matures, the hardware seems to all work fine.

Amaysim uses the Optus 4G network - in Australia, there are three main networks (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone) and the others generally resell access to either of those two.

Amaysim says that the Optus network uses: 700MHz; 1800MHz; 2100MHz; and 2600MHz.
see https://www.amaysim.com.au/help/mobile/getting-started/is-my-device-compatible

There's an extra step to connect to a "hotspot" in order to use mobile data - there are separate hotspots for "iPhone" and "non-iPhone". Choose the non-iPhone one. (see here: https://www.amaysim.com.au/help/mobile/getting-started/manage-internet-settings-mobile-phone )
Cricket dropping support for 3G and PinePhone in general
I tried to get in contact with Cricket to activate my PinePhone with them and they are not supporting any new devices that do not support Cricket's High Definition Voice network. This is a very recent change that was made. Current users (including PinePhone users I presume) using Cricket will be supported until February 2022 when they depreciate it entirely. Attempting to swap an existing SIM card into a PinePhone will deactivate the line entirely and it will have to be reactivated by Cricket support.

Other users have been able to reproduce this issue: https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=12897&highlight=cricket. Hyperdriveguy (talk) 03:17, 12 March 2021 (UTC)
Partial test of Israeli carriers on flaky OS .
Edited May 17 -21 by Daniel Grynvald. using a new wiki ID.
(password reset possible? )

A note:
The below is still relevant to describe the conditions under which I tested existing carriers.

I live in Tel Aviv, Israel. I received my Pinephone on May 7 -21.

I Successfully replaced Manjaro (untested) with a flaky alpha stage PmOS Sxmo yesterday, May 12 -21.

I have so far tried 6 different Carriers that registered with repeated flooding of UTF-8 error messages on Sxmo. into full reception bars. (Hebrew is generally Iso 8859 or similar charset)

I called My Pinephone from a seventh virtual network carrier SIM on an older Samsung Galaxy that I left untested for reasons of keeping SIM integrity.intact.

Sxmo will show an incoming call number as notification on top of page covering the notification bar completely.

(No ring signal. Only vibrator works. albeit speaker passed postmarketOS factory test repeatedly earlier. - I suspect volume control goes to zero by default or similar.)

-Asking the user in fine print if user wants to pick up the incoming call. Sxmo will then fail to answer the call with a permission denied error. Sxmo will later show you a reminder of missed calls.

The five Carrier SIM cards that registred by sending SMS service messages and also received an incoming call notification ok are:

Cellcom Prepaid Israel, (A main 4g network developer and operator

Golan Telecom Prepaid. (A virtual network carrier and operator.)

Partner Prepaid, former Orange, Israel (and another main 4g operator.)

Pelephone Prepaid A 4g only Operator.

Hot Mobile Prepaid, a budget main carrier.

¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹¹

019 is a virtual operator relying on Cellcom.
It registered on myPinephone with full bar reception, but without receiving either SMS or incoming call notifications.

For now untested by me:

We4g/Xphone. virtual Israeli operator. (tried hard to get hold of a SIM.)

012. another virtual carrier.
